| JOBS AND THE ECONOMY (back to Issues & Positions)
Massachusetts’ economy will be based upon our strongest resource: our educated and skilled workforce. As a member of the Board of Directors for the Metro North Regional Employment Board, Dan has helped over 20,000 people in Massachusetts find gainful employment. But that is only the beginning of what can be done. Business leaders throughout the country view the Massachusetts workforce as one of the most skilled in the world. We must build upon this competitive advantage.
--We must commit more funding for grants to small start-up companies to help them get off the ground. Small business is where must jobs are created and we must work diligently to invest in them who in turn will invest in their employees.
--As Chairman of the Subcommittee on Zoning and Economic Development, Dan understands the need for speeding up the permitting process but not at the expense of excluding public input. Dan believes that there can be a balance that addresses both the needs of the business and those of the neighborhoods that may be impacted by their presence.
OTHER IDEAS
--Dan understands that in order to get businesses to invest here, we must first make it affordable to live here. Dan is a strong advocate for the Governor’s Municipal Partnership Plan that would give more local control back to cities and towns to generate revenues as they see fit, as well as closing big Corporation’s tax loopholes that have left the companies CEO’s with record profits while the taxpayer and small businesses bear the brunt of the overall tax burden. It’s not fair and it isn’t right and Dan is ready to do something about it- not just “talk the talk”. Dan is also committed to making the right investments in education, health care and infrastructure so that we can attract companies who are wiling to invest here in Massachusetts.
--Dan also understands that the high cot of housing is a deterrent to a company locating here or making a decision to stay in Massachusetts and supports the Massachusetts Housing Partnership that will provide $10 million to double the SoftSecond program and MassHousing in their commitment to provide $40 million to the Affordable Housing Trust Fund.
